Having survived the loss of his mother and an abusive father, all Jebediah (Jeb) Creaven wanted in life was a steady job, a pretty girl, and the prospect of a good life ahead. When that life comes crashing down around him, he knows it is time to get out of town. A lumberman by trade, Jeb takes the next steamer out of Saginaw to the wilds of northern Michigan, where endless pine forests and prosperity are waiting.
And, once in Beaver Bay, Jeb’s new life appears to have everything — new friends, a new job, new forests, and even a new romance. But it also brings with it a life-threatening illness, a deadly rival, and a mysterious woman who seems to always be just outside of Jeb’s vision. Will Jeb ever get the life he has been longing for?
